Boats and Birds

Mike wanted to poke that nurse back. She kept poking him with pointy needles and he didn't like it. Soon they claimed it was quiet time and left him alone. His mom was going to go get some things from home and the nurse just left so he was alone, in the room, it was dark and he was particularly scared. He turned over on his side as he began to cry, he was so scared and he didn't want to die.

Alex toddled down to Mike's room, tears pouring down his little cheeks.
"Mikey are you still awake?" He whispered, since the room was dark.

Mike sniffled, and sat up in bed, pulling on the tubes and cords as he looked around for Alex.
"A-Alex?"

"I'm here." Alex said, wiping at the tears. He didn't want to cry in front of Mike.

Mike patted the bed, he couldn't see in the dark but Alex didn't sound to good. "A-Alex, whats the matter?"

"... My momma..." He whispered softly. He climbed up on the bed beside Mike.

Mike sighed and pushed Alex down before cuddling up to him. "What's wrong with her?" he asked as he rested his head on Alex's small chest.

"She's dying... soon. My daddy was cwying. He never cwies..."

Mike hugged Alex tightly. "My poor Alex." He wanted to make Ales feel better.

"Mikey, you're the one whose sick. I should be helping you."

Mike shook his head. "No....I've been sick and im okay with that....I understand but my poor Alex." He didn't want Alex's mommy to go away.

Alex wrapped his arms around Mike and pecked his cheek. Then he buriied his head in Mike's shoulder.

Mike held Alex tightly as he felt his eyes water. He hated this for his friend, he really did.

Suddenly Alex's father appeared in the doorway.
"Um Alex... you might want to come with me for a minute." He said softly.
"Wh-why?" Alex asked.
"Your momma wants to you."

Mike frowned and reluctantly let Alex go. It would be okay because he would be here as long as he could just in case Alex needed him.

"I'll be back Mikey." Alex sighed, he didn't like where this was going.
He walked down to his mother's room with his father.
"There's my little boy."His mother croaked.
He frowned.
She smiled and opened her arms for a hug.He walked into them and sobbed into her shoulder.
"M-momma... you're gonna die aren't you?"
She sighed.
"Yes baby. But don't worry. I'm just going to live up in heaven with god." She pointed to the ceiling.
"Momma i don't want you to go."
"I know baby, I know. I love you darling."
"I love you too mommy." He cried.
"Daddy's gonna take care of you okay? And I here you have a new little friend. That's good." She gave a small smile.
"But momma he's gonna die too!" Alex sobbed.
"Now baby, theres still hope for him. Don't have that attitude." She said softly.
He just cried into her arms. Eventually her heart monitor began to slow.
"Alex I think you better leave now." His dad panicked. He didn't want Alex to watch his mother die.
"Okay... I love you momma."
"I love you too baby. Now go help that friend of yours. He needs you." She smiled softly. She kissed Alex's forehead as he climbed off the bed.
He gave her a small wave and walked back to Mike's room.

Mike had curled up into a small ball and fell asleep. His weak heart getting weaker and weaker with every minute. The heart monitor showed this. Mike's soft snores filled the room.

Alex sat down in the chair beside the bed and cried.

Mike sat up and sleepily rubbed his eyes. He noticed Alex as the reason he woke up, his friend was crying. "Awwww Alex don't cry." Mike wanted to get out of bed and hug him but the cords stopped him.

"Momma's g-gone." He stammered, tears pouring faster out of his bright blue eyes.

Mike breath hitched in his throat as he wanted to hold his friend. "I-Im sowy...." He cried.

He scrambled up onto the bed and hugged Mike.
"She said I gotta be here for you now. Cause you need me."

Mike blinked, wiping some tears away. "H-Huh?" He was confused, his momma didn't just die.

"My momma told me I gotta be here for you. She said if I have a good attitude it could help you get better."

Mike sighed. "A-Alex.....I need a new heart to make be better." He kissed Alex's cheek. "But your making me feel better."
