Boats and Birds

"I don't think your momma likes me much." Alex whispered so only Mike could hear.

Mike blinked, he was surprised and let his guard down for one second when his momma yanked him off and held him still. "No, momma I want Alex." He whined but his mother shook her head and picked him up with one arm, the other took Alex's hand and lead him down the hallways.

Alex frowned but followed Mike's mother. Had he done something to upset her?

"Momma." Mike whined at his mother as he tried to squirm down. She sighed and stopped, popping his arm. "You had better stop it Michael Gregory Mizanin." She said sternly. He rubbed his reddening arm, his lip quivered.

Alex didn't like that. He was getting angry but he knew better then to yell at an adult. He simply frowned.

Soon tears were making there way down Mike's cheeks as his mother carried his through the hospital.

Alex looked over at Mike and gave a small smile.
"Are you okay?" He said softly.

Mike sniffled and nodded quickly as his mother turned into a room and placed him on the bed. She told him she would be back and not to move. She went to go find a nurse.

Alex climbed on the bed because his arms wouldn't reach from on the ground. He hugged Mike tightly.

"Im sorry, Momma is upset and scared because the doctors think I will die soon...." He trailed off.

"It's okay. I'm probably being annoying..." He trailed off.

"No, you make me feel better. You make me happy and I would be even more scared if it wasn't for you." Mike hugged Alex tightly. "Your my very best friend remember?"

Alex smiled.
"You're my bestest friend ever too." He grinned and hugged Mike.

Mike frowned. "Im sowy..." He didn't want to leave Alex because he WAS he very best friend.

"Don't be sowy, you can't help that you're sick." Alex frowned.

"I don't want to be sick anymore." He nuzzled his face into the crook Alex's small neck.

"I don't want you to be sick either. I want you to stay my bestest friend ever."

"I want to...but I think im dying, you will have to fine a new one." Mike sighed, looking at one of his small hands.

"No." Alex frowned. "I want you to be my bestest friend." He pouted.

"Well I wanna be but I can't help it." He lowered his head. He didn't want to die.

"I know you can't." Alex frowned and sighed, hugging Mike even tighter.

"How is your momma?" Mike asked slowly as he saw his on her way back with a nurse.

"Not good." Alex looked down. "I hope she's okay... I hope you both get better."

Mike nodded as his mother came back in. Th nurse changed him into a gown before sticking him with various needles and hooking him up to many different machines.

Alex didn't like watching Mike like this.
He told Mike he was going to go see his momma and left. He was about to walk into his mothers room but stopped when he heard his dad speaking. He hid just outside the door. He peeked in. His dad was crying. He'd never seen his daddy cry.
"It'll be okay Kevin." His mother said in a hoarse voice. "Be strong. Our babys going to need you."
"How am I supposed to be strong when you're leaving?"
"You'll find a way. I know you."
Alex's lower lip trembled. His momma was dying. And so was Mike.
